Permafrost Thermal Dynamics and Cryostratigraphy at Villum Research Station, Station Nord, Eastern North Greenland (81°N)

We provide the northernmost permafrost thermal analysis in Greenland through ground temperature time series (2014–2021) and cryostratigraphy of two 20-m deep boreholes (SN1 SN2) at Villum Research Station, Station Nord (81°N). Three sedimentary units are identified stratigraphy: glacial, glaciomarine, beach deposits. These sandy gravelly deposits interpreted to comprise a deglaciation isostatic emergence sequence. Ice-poor epigenetic grew downwards into following subaerial exposure. Relatively high salinity values (up 70 ppt) observed glaciomarine unit, resulting freezing point depressions between 0 −4°C. The Prinsesse Ingeborg Halvø study area has polar tundra climate is unique compared other Arctic areas because thick (>1 m), long-lasting snow cover. This cover results relatively temperatures for latitude warmest known north 80°N. Over seven-year period, average 20 m was −7.87°C SN1 −7.06°C SN2. warming rate depth 0.07°C/year 0.05°C/year SN2, rates which similar those sites. Active layer thickness, extrapolated from measurements, varied 0.5 1.16 m. interplay dynamics seasonal air controls regime area. Air during autumn midwinter, fastest seasons, influence gradually developing, dense snowpack.
